ess is very happy to discuss ideas you may have for commissioning a new piece of original work. Everyone has a favourite verse, poem or quotation which she can make into a beautiful piece of art. She has been approached by a wide range of people wanting to give a special gift to someone and groups who have collected to mark an occasion such as a birthday, wedding, anniversary, retirement or ordination - or any other special occasion.

There are five stages in the commissioning of a new piece of Tess' original calligraphy art work. Start by contacting Tess to discuss your ideas. Steps 2, 3 and 4 are the creative development process and Step 5 is the delivery of your completed work.
Initial discussion between client and artist Tess about objective of the commission, deadline, choice of words, illustration, size, colours and style of required work.
Undertaking initial research into significance of words, illustrations and symbols; initial sketches to ensure the piece has beauty, meaning and depth; liaising with customer to agree outline of work. Preparing quotation for customer . Once this has been accepted, further development of artwork commences.
Further research and development of ideas. Finalising the design. Execution of the artwork; laying out, drawing and painting of lettering and illustrations.
Embossing and hand finishing with gold, silver or copper leaf; discussing preference for style of frame and mount, order framing through specialist picture framer.
Arranging handover of work to customer preferably in person or by courier; confirm that customer has received work and is satisfied.

Designing a commissioned piece is very personal. I like to understand the importance of the piece you are asking for and something about the person who will receive it. You may not have an image in your mind when you contact me but you will probably have thoughts about what you would like to include in the piece. I may ask you for colours you like and any special symbolism which is important to you,
I will ask you if there is anything you have seen on my website which you like the style of or any elements of a piece you like.
I will ask if you want a traditional or contemporary style or something 'blue and blodgy'. I would like to know what the message is that is important to you. When this piece is on display do you want its message to be clear or something more subtle which draws one closer to see what it is about. I aim to be as flexible as possible and will at all times work with you and listen to your ideas. I will also be honest and tell you if something may not work well. Please feel free to get in touch for an informal chat with no obligation.

Tess was contacted by Richard from a church in Talaton, Devon. He was looking to have a Roll of Honour made for local men who had fallen in the First World War. He had researched the names of these men and had found information about their daily lives and the work they did prior to becoming soldiers. He felt it was important to include these details as it gave an understanding to the reader just how young some of these men were. In her design Tess has captured the Devon countryside. She also felt that each man should have a distinct place in the list. The cross represents a pause so the reader appreciates each soldier as a man in his own right. The last name - J Lock - is quite poignant as it was not possible to find any further details about him. This is Talaton's own 'unknown soldier'.

A couple from the Forest of Dean contacted Tess following the passing of a treasured auntie. When Cherry Ann's auntie was a little girl, she wrote this poem. Cherry Ann wanted to have these words made into a piece of art in her memory. Tess met with them on two occasions prior to designing the piece. This gave her a valuable opportunity to understand more about the personality of her auntie who had written the poem. Tess has been able to capture the essence of her words which brought them to life for Cherry Ann and produce a piece of art they could hang in their home which would keep the memory of her auntie alive.

A lady from California in the US was looking for an artist to illustrate the words from The Buddhist Retreat by Ch'ang Chien. After a number of emails Tess sketched out some ideas based upon the email discussions. Tess wanted to capture the peaceful atmosphere at the top of the mountain and also the journey to get there. The words of the poem are very calming and descriptive. As Tess read them over and over she could almost feel the warmth of the sun, the gentle breeze and the quiet sounds of a temple bell. Tess' customer was overwhelmed with the finished piece and she sent a photograph (shown below) of it hanging in her home. Tess had to send it all the way to California unframed and, as requested, made some suggestions for framing.
