his is a well-known Christian prayer attributed to St Augustine, a theologian and philosopher. Augustine was born in 354 in Algeria. He converted to Christianity in 386. In 395, he was made Coadjutor Bishop of Hippo and became full Bishop shortly thereafter. This prayer reflects themes of humility, self-awareness and seeking Gods guidance and presence.

This piece was commissioned by someone closely connected to Durham Cathedral. The design depicts a supporting angel within the illuminated letter K. The colours are kept warm and rich, with a view through the window of the Cathedral. The cross is the Cross of St Cuthbert who travelled far and spread the word of Christ. He became the Abbot- bishop of Lindisfarne. He spent the last two years of his life caring for the sick of the plague that decimated his diocese, working numerous miracles of healing, and gifted with the ability to prophesy. His remains are to be found in Durham Cathedral.

The words of this piece, where we are asking for the Lord’s help, are separated by small crosses. These can be used to pause when praying or meditating upon the words of this powerful prayer.
