Set Me As A Seal

his work incorporates verses from scripture and poetry to show the dignity, loyalty and emotion of war. The top image represents both the fallen on Flanders fields and also the poppy fields of Afghanistan. The words around the windows from left to right are:

  • Tear of Dignity: Greater love has no man than this, to lay down his life…. John Chapter 15 Verse 13

  • Active Duty: A time for love, a time for hate, a time for war, a time for peace. Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 Verse 8

  • Coming Home: May our laurels be those of gallantry and honour, loyalty and courage. The Royal Marines Prayer

  • He’s My Brother: Dare to reach out you hand into darkness and pull another hand into the light Norman B Rice

  • Reflecting: Where there is despair, hope, darkness, light, sadness, joy. Prayer of St Francis.

Lines interspersing the windows are from Flames Rise Brightly by Bob Simion and A New Dawn by Beth Dobbs. The words in the centre are from Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) who was an English poet, dramatist, and art scholar. His most famous work, For the Fallen, is well known for being used in Remembrance Sunday services:

  • They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
  • Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
  • At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
  • Set Me As A Seal.

The words below the aftermath of battle are from the Book of Joel, Chapter 2 Verse 7: They run like mighty men; they climb the wall like men of war... they march every one on his ways and they break not their ranks.

The silhouetted image of the soldiers suggests the dust settling, the atmosphere of reflection and the slightly dazed questioning about the day’s events.

A donation from every order is made to an armed forces charity of your choice.
