poem known as the Apache Blessing was originally written by the non-Native author Elliot Arnold in his novel Blood Brother. The novel features Apache culture.
This poem is not associated with any religion, it is a wish for the couple to whom it is presented. The design of this piece attempts to give a flavour of the Native American imagery with various symbolism such as the feather, which was seen as a high honour, power, wisdom, trust, strength, and freedom and believed to be a gift from the sky. These include the circular ‘Hogan’ which represents the permanent home, the patterned banner representing the woven blanket which is accorded special significance in a Native American society, showing respect for those who have made an important contribution to the community, the wolves who represent strength and bravery.
